According to the ASPCA, approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year in the US. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
Only about 35% of shelter dogs are adopted, while 28% of all pet dogs are bought from breeders. 'Purebred' dogs are often prone to health issues because of their limited gene pool, and are often bred at puppy mills, where dogs are kept in inhumane conditions and forced to breed continuously without regard for genetic health. The ASPCA estimates as many as 10,000 puppy mills in the US alone.
