Spring is in full swing, and though we might still have a bit of rain, we are starting to see glorious sunny days as well. During spring, we see a lot of our favorite places come alive again, which makes it a great time to hit the outdoors with our pets. If you’re going to be going on that spring break, it’s good to be prepared on the road. Here are some tips on staying safe during the spring!
As the sunny days become more frequent, it is important to remember that temperatures in a closed vehicle can reach dangerous levels fairly quickly. Even if you’re just making a quick stop somewhere, leaving a pet in a locked car can easily result in heat stroke or organ failure. Never leave a pet in a hot car! We will be stressing this more and more as the summer months approach.
Something else to keep in mind is your pet’s safety while the car is motion. Dog harnesses go a long way in protecting your pet in case of a collision. Not only do seat belt harnesses prevent distractions while driving by keeping your dog in place, but a harness will also reduce the chance of your dog colliding with either humans or being ejected from the vehicle, as well as preventing them from dashing out the door in case of an emergency. A seat belt harness may not work as well for a cat, in which case the next best option would be a carrier.
If you’ll be traveling long distances, it is important to make sure your pet has enough water. Long car rides can be stressful for an animal if they are not used to it, and may cause them to need more water than usual. If you’ll be traveling to dry or hot locations, your pet will definitely need some water after a day’s adventuring. For this, we recommend having some sort of easily accessible water holder. While just having an extra bowl in the trunk can work, we recommend travel-friendly collapsible bowls that are easy to store and carry around.
What better way to release some stress than to have some play time! Bringing something fun along the ride will keep your pet busy if you’re in for a long trip. Bringing a familiar toy can also bring a little bit of home to an unfamiliar place for a pet.
