"I grew up in what was once known as the “breadbasket of the world” now recognized as Silicon Valley, California. At age 16, I was fortunate to land a scholarship with Outward Bound to be in the first “all girls patrol” of the Sierra Nevada. This experience exposed me to the beauty and power of nature and instilled in me a passionate desire to do what I could to preserve and protect it. After Outward Bound I pursued my work in the wilderness by taking children backpacking throughout the Sierra as a trip leader for the Youth Science Institute, then as a work leader for the Youth Conservation Corps, and finally as an environmental education teacher for the State Parks. My sights were set on becoming a wilderness ranger so I attended Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo in Natural Resources Management. While attending Cal Poly I was introduced to Humboldt County when my mother bought a small truck farm along the Van Duzen River in 1974. She grew organic pears and tomatoes that she sold to the Arcata Coop.
I found my way to Humboldt, had my son, got my Master’s degree at Humboldt State University, became a Marriage and Family Therapist and joined the fight to save our mighty Redwoods.
After retiring from Counseling, my husband and I had the opportunity to start a pet supply store that was consistent with our environmental values, our love of animals, and our commitment to our beloved community. We created a sweet smelling beautiful store with a knowledgeable, kindhearted, charming staff that will offer you a fabulous cup of coffee as they do their level best to assist you.
In my practice of over 20 years it became glaringly evident what “Ambassadors of Love” pets are to us. Personally and as a counselor I have had the privilege of witnessing how our fur-clad “Ambassadors” have the capacity to connect us to our caring, to our simple joy and sometimes even to provide the link that keeps us tethered to the planet.
A wonderful gift to me is how deeply touched I have been by the open hearted, unabashed love of animals demonstrated by the people who have come into our shop. Their transparent generosity of spirit are conveyed in their sweet stories and lit up faces that have made the shop my own personal Shangri-La. The good will and kindness our furry ‘Ambassadors of Love” inspire, give me hope and confirms my faith that love can prevail." -- Marni
