A Call to Paws

Below is our letter to Arcata City Council on the Clean Up Grant of Little Lakes Property

To whom it concerns,

We are writing in regards to a proposed Dog Park at the Little Lakes Property in Arcata which is now up for a Clean Up grant that may allow us to finally get this long overdue and long-awaited park. We have been working diligently with the Arcata Dog Park Group to get support for what we contend is true community service. Over the years we have gotten additional support from Friends of the Arcata Marsh as well as 512 Arcata citizens signing our petition in-store and online. The potential benefits of a local dog park to our community are immense. We get many concerned pet parents mentioning the frequent off-leash dogs in areas where they are not allowed. This can heighten tensions between dog owners as well as impact wildlife. Our lovely Arcata Marsh is a perfect example of this, with many dogs frequenting the area and some being off-leash. This heavily impacts this wildlife sanctuary as well as makes it more difficult for owners to locate and retrieve dog waste.

As a continued effort to educate pet owners and support responsible use of our public spaces, we have run many Arcata Marsh Clean-Ups over the years. We have picked up hundreds of pounds of dog waste and trash from the marsh. A local dog park, can curb the prohibited off-leash use of many of our favorite public spaces as well as limit the abandoned dog waste issue the marsh deals with now. Not to mention this can be a wonderful place for tourists and their canine companions to visit while in town, giving them a place to stretch their legs and socialize. We of course cannot forget our Arcata residents who stand to benefit by giving them and their pets a safe, responsible, and purpose-built area for their dogs to run, play, and socialize.

We are asking for as many letters as possible in support of the CLEANUP Grant of LITTLE LAKES PROPERTY to enable the city to move forward on establishing a “Premier Dog Park” that is consistent with the progressive nature of Arcata.
