Fresh Foods for Small Mammals

We at Humboldt Pet Supply love recommending fresh foods for our pets. It’s about time we showed some love for our little fuzzy friends. Introducing fresh foods into their diets bring a plethora of unprocessed vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that will be more bio-available to their bodies. Here are some suggestions for omnivores and herbivores alike!

Herbivores

Plant eating pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. These pets may enjoy diets rich in veggies, fresh greens, and fruits. Foods like fresh greens, carrots, parsley, fennel, and parsnips can be fed. Small amounts of berries can be fed safely, but should be limited because of their high sugar content. Items rich in Vitamin C are another great addition, especially in species with high Vitamin C requirements like Guinea Pigs. So bell peppers and orange slices are great options.

Omnivores

Many of our small animal pals are considered omnivorous. This means they often eat plant and animal sources and a diet rich in both of these food items will keep them happy and healthy. This may include rats, mice, hedgehogs, hamsters, and gerbils. Dietary additions for them can include veggies, fruits, and even bugs! Many foods listed for the herbivores are perfect here too, although foods like cabbage and brussel sprouts should be avoided. It is also worth noting that items high in sugars, such as berries, should be limited in their diets. As for the squirmy snacks foods like mealworks, crickets, shrimp, and other dried or live foods you may find marketed towards reptiles make great snacks.
