Pet Friendly Plants

This one goes out to all you plant obsessed folks out there. House plants are a much appreciated addition to a space to add greenery to your home, clean your air, and improve your mood.The unfortunate part of this is many of our common household plants are incredibly toxic to our beloved furry companions. Even a little nibble can send them straight to the vet. Here is a list of pet friendly plants to help you bring the outdoors in.

Calathea Orbifolia

Quite the beautiful broad, oval shapped leaves contrasted with green stripes. It’s low light requirement makes it perfect for rooms with minimal natural light.

Care Guide

Thrives in medium to bright indirect light, but can tolerate low indirect light. A regular watering schedule of about every 1-2 weeks, allowing for soil to partially drain and dry out between waterings. This plant can benefit from a humid environment, so perfect for a bathroom… or really any room in Humboldt. Regular temperatures around 60°F is perfect for this plant with higher temperatures comfortably getting into the 80°F.

African Violet

Looking for a colorful pop? ?Look no further than the African Violet. A beautiful year around bloom coming in a variety of colors.

Care Guide

Violets thrive in slightly more restrictive temperatures within 68-77°F. Regular watering is needed as well as the occasional fertilization to keep that bloom going all year long.

Rattlesnake Plant

Everyone has most likey had or seen a rattlesnake plants. With their distinct leaf shape and coloration, they make a great addition to any home plant collection.

Care Guide

Keeping these guys out of direct light, in well draining soil is going to ensure you have a happy and healthy plant on your hands. Water when top of soil looks and feels dry. Humid temperatures ranging from 70-80°F work best.

Spider Plant

An absolute favorite in pet friendly environments, this plant will keep your pets safe and is well next to indestructable. They also work great to purify air in the home. They are also a bonus as they have a similar chemical to catnip.

Care Guide

Pretty typical care for these guys, prefering indirect low light and temperatures between 60-80°F. As mentioned previous, these plants are incredibly resilient and can endure less than ideal conditions that many of us not so green-thummed may put it through.

Bird’s nest fern

Absolutely adorable little fern that would go perfectly in any low light environment with ample humidity. Bathroom buddy perhaps?

Care Guide

Low light and high humidity do this plant good. Well draining soil works best, allowing the soil to get dry to the touch before watering. Temperatures are pretty usual at 60-80°F.

Staghorn Fern

An absolute stunner of a plant can be potted, mounted on a wall, or hung in a basket. The staghorn fern will do well in any room with bright or indirect light, but never in a dark room.

Well draining soil and regular temperatures between 60-80°F do best. Watering can vary greatly dependent on the conditions. This plant does well in many environments, light levels, and humidity levels.

Boston Fern

This absolute classic houseplant is a classic for a reason. It is super tolerante to varying care levels. Another perfect for those not so green plant owners.

Care Guide

This plant does good in anything but bright direct light. Fairly high humidity levels often make it easiest to keep the pot in a drainage layer filled with water.

Ponytail Palm

This plant is just asking to be a cat toy, with its whispy draping fronds. Yet another plant murderer proof addition.

Care Guide

They only need to be fertilized two to three times a year. They require dry soil, so be sure not to give them too much water.

Gloxinia

Another colorful addition to the bunch, this bloom can range from blue to pink and red.

Care guide

You’ll want to keep these blooms in temperatures around 71–75°F. Let them sit in bright, indirect sunlight and seeds should germinate in approximately three weeks.

Date Palm

An absolute stunner and one of the larger plants on our list, this palm is one of many varieties in the Arecaceae family that can flourish indoors while keeping your pets safe. A great choice to really tie the room together.

Care Guide

Keep your date palm in bright, indirect sunlight and be careful not to overwater. Keep the soil slightly drier than usual will keep this healthier.
