Ruffwear Grip Trex

Our Ranger Picks for the month of March are Ruffwear Grip Trex. With the spring and summer months coming, paw protection is paramount for many of our pets. Saya is quite the adventurous dog, pushing herself to her limits far too often with no warning of injury. We have backpacked at least once a year for the last 7 years of her life. She loves every second of it, but often comes home with paw sores that take weeks to heal.

One particular incident was on the Lost Coast Trail. Anyone who has been knows how rough the terrain is there, especially for doggie paws. She wore her pads a mere 4 miles into the trip, cutting our trek short. She was unwilling to continue down the trail, so we camped at the same spot for the time we had. We kept her paws clean and made sure she had minimal activity. Once our time came to leave the Lost Coast, she still had a hard time walking and had to be carried for about half the distance. Having trail booties aren’t a silver bullet, but can greatly improve their trail endurance and safety.

Another trail we regular is the Canyon Creek Trail with it’s many granite staircases. This trail was perfect testing grounds for the boots. Strapping them on and adjusting every quarter mile or so for the first couple miles made sure those puppies stayed on. At camp she was able to roam free of booties, but the time on the trail with boots greatly reduced wear on her delicate paws.

Boots take time to get accustomed to but are really crucial for the safety of our pets paws. Ruffwear’s wide range of boots has something for everyone. Properly fitting the boots is just as important as the boots themselves. With poor fitting boots, chaffing and abrasions are bound to happen due to excess rubbing. Check ‘em out on your next visit! We are happy to help get the right fit.
